What’s up in Terlingua?

By August 23, 2018No Comments

If many Terlingua/Study Butte residents have their way, what’s up won’t be two new, externally lit, 270-foot-tall telecommunications towers.

Three notices were released, informing the public that applications were under review with the Federal Communications Commission for installation of the towers, to be built by Alta Towers, LLC, of New Braunfels.

Brewster County Commissioner, Pct. 2, Hugh Garrett stated in a letter to the FCC, “I have been in contact since early May with the project manager for these proposed towers. In every communication, I have emphasized the importance of dark skies in Brewster County, and suggested their tower projects be redesigned to use towers that do not require aviation safety lighting. With their recent publication of public notices regarding the proposed towers, apparently Alta Towers has decided not to take our concerns into consideration.”

Meanwhile, Brewster County Commissioners have been tightening up their orders regulating outdoor lighting to include cases that were not previously considered, such as telecommunications towers lighting.
