West Texas Movie Making in Big Bend Region
IN THE BIG BEND REGION OF TEXAS
 lizabeth Taylor, Tommy Lee Jones, Matt Damon, Dennis Quaid, Sissy Spacek, Joel and Ethan Coen, Meg Ryan, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jim Garner, and Willie Nelson. Their names read like roll call on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but what they also have in common is that each of these legends was cast in a movie made in the Big Bend country of West Texas.
 In some of these films, such as High Lonesome (1950) one of the first major productions shot in the Trans-Pecos, it is the stark beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert that shines bright on the silver screen. Other, such as Giant (1956), No Country for Old Men (2007), and There Will Be Blood (2007) are epic interpretations of the storyteller's art that were adapted from the masterly works of Edna Ferber, Cormac McCarthy, and Upton Sinclair.
Some of the most beloved movies were inspired by the people and the places give the Big Bend its unique character. The Good Old Boys (1995), which marked the directorial debut of Tommy Lee Jones, and his more recent directing project, the award-winning Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005), are honest and invigorating like the land itself.
