Local is best for grassland restoration

Colin Shackelford, a West Texas Native Plant Specialist with the Trans-Pecos Native Plant Initiative, is creating solutions for landowners who want to see real grassland rehabilitation results. To do this, he and a team of scientists are developing seed banks from locally sourced native plants. At two garden plots, one located at Sierra La Rana/CF Ranch, the native plant team tested seeds gathered from ranches all over West Texas, and collected data for several years. Shackelford said they looked for plants with high germination rates so the plants could sustain themselves.
