Glider business soars in Marfa

By August 25, 2017No Comments

Marfa Gliders, owned and operated by Burt Compton, opened in 2003, but he has been flying since he was a little boy. Growing up in an aviation family in Miami, Florida, flying is in his blood. Before moving to Marfa, Compton operated Miami Gliders flight school in South Florida.

Glider planes are Compton’s choice because it’s a challenge for him.

“You have to use your wits to stay aloft,” he said about the strategies and techniques behind flying a glider.

Compton further explained the importance of learning to read the sky, something he learned from his father, Fritz Compton. The conscientious pilot is sure to check with passengers throughout flights to make sure they are comfortable. While in flight, Compton explains cloud formations and cracks jokes with willing listeners, or allows passengers to sit back and enjoy the silent scenery from thousands of feet in the air.
