Big Bend State Park Ranger works hard to protect starry skies

By December 28, 2017No Comments

“This is a really hard thing to get,” beamed Big Bend State Park Interpreter-Ranger Amber Harrison, referring to the hard-won International Dark Skies status recently bestowed upon the park.

It took a year of public outreach, data collection, photo gathering, and networking to create an application impressive enough for the International Dark-Sky Association to approve.

Harrison didn’t really know what she was in for when she agreed to take on a dark skies initiative for the park over a year ago. She was sent to McDonald Observatory for training designed to beef up the interpretive programs surrounding one of the park’s great assets – its nighttime views.

FYI – Sierra La Rana is an approved International Dark Sky Development.
